Dear Overholt Family,

I just wanted to take some time to again tell you how much I appreciate the scholarship. It is such an honor to receive a scholarship in memory of Mark Overholt. From my understanding, he was a role model of a caring citizen, excelling student and a dedicated athlete. A person such as this blesses those they meet, makes a difference in everything they do, and cannot easily be forgotten.  Even though I never met him, Mr. Overholt has become an inspiration and role model in my life.  I hope that I can spend my college experience in a way that would have made him proud.

In order to do this, I have spent my summer busily preparing to be a successful student-athlete at the University of Washington.  I recently registered for my classes and will be taking calculus, chemistry and literature in the fall.  I have also spent many hours working to get in shape so I will be ready for my first colligate Cross Country season.  A few weeks ago, I met my new coach, and she was quite congenial and excited for the opportunities ahead.

I want you to know that these opportunities will not be taken lightly.  Athletically, I am thrilled to be given the chance to be surrounded by people who are not only great athletes, but passionate about running and representing their school.  Personally, I am eager to challenge my own limits and become a positive member on the team.  Acedemically, I am currently headed down the path for a degree in bioengineering.  I am interested in this field because of the many opportunities it holds; which stretch from molecular lab work to organ regeneration.  As the bioengineering professor at orientation said, it is a difficult field but those who succeed are motivated by the desire to make a positive difference in the world.  Mark Overholt did just that, and now I plan to do the same.

In the end, I would like to assure you that the scholarship money will be put to good use.  I am excited to begin this fall as a responsible student-athlete and I look forward to making the most of every opportunity.  Your family has touched my life in a huge way.  On Scholarship Awards Night, Hailey's story of her uncle brought tears to my eyes.  From her speech, it was evident how great a man Mr. Overholt truely was.  I cannot express the honor I felt that night to have been the recipient of his memorial scholarship.  Even though Scholarship Awards Night was only one evening, its impact will last a lifetime.  Throughout my high school experience I have been awarded several different awards including Most Inspirational, Most Admired, and Cascade Hall of Fame.  I want you to know that being awarded this scholarship meant just as much, if not more, than any other award I have ever received.  Your family has blessed me and reminded me that in the end, a person's character is what counts.  I will work hard to be an example of  admirable character just like Mark Overholt and the people in your family.  Let me know if there is anything I can do for you.  I hope that your family has a wonderful year!
